9 Things to Do Near Home This Summer

Looking for some new ideas for things to do this summer? Look no further!

Summer is the ideal time to take a break from our hectic and busy lives, and enjoy a slightly slower pace of life. Beer gardens 🍺 and terraces are open, delicious produce is in season 🍅 and for many, things tend to calm down at work 🙌. There are so many way to enjoy yourself even if you don’t have much vacation time to take, or have the budget for a sunny holiday abroad 🏖. We’ve compiled a list of close to home alternatives to help get you in that holiday state of mind. 😎

  1. Check out the local museums, galleries, and exhibitions 🖼

Whether you’ve lived in the same city your entire life, or moved at some stage along the way, chances are there are tons of museums and art galleries you’ve never visited. The summer weather can be unpredictable — sometimes the heat is too much to bear, and other times the rain just doesn’t seem to stop. Visiting your local museum, gallery or an exhibition is a great way to enjoy something different regardless of the weather. You may even learn a thing or two!

  1. Hop on a train for a day trip 🚅

Due to the incredible network of trains that zip across the country, you can get quite far in a fairly timely manner. Take advantage of that this summer and check out a city or district you’ve never been to.

  1. Spa staycation 🧖

For the ultimate rest and relaxation staycation, check into a local spa hotel. Not only will it be fun to let yourself be pampered, you may even come away feeling like an entire new person. Isn’t that the goal of any good vacation? If you’re on a budget, you may want to steer clear of the hotels, but you can make your own spa days at home for a much lower price! 💷.

  1. Go camping 🏕

Camping is a fantastic way to distance yourself from the stresses and triggers of everyday life. That’s not to say camping itself isn’t stressful! The best part about camping is that there are a variety of different ways to do it. Don’t want to go too far? Set up a ⛺️ in your back garden. Not so sure about sleeping on the ground? Rent a camper van or bring along an air mattress. Wild camping is tolerated in much of the UK (just do your research!), so for the adventurous among us, you have the option to really leave the hustle and bustle behind.

  1. Attend a local event 🎊 Find out if your city, town, or village has any special events during the summer. And if yours doesn’t, perhaps a nearby one does. Village fêtes, outdoor concerts 🎶, fundraising dinners, drive-in film nights 🍿, flea markets, and even bake sales 🍰 can all be a really fun way to experience something new without straying too far from home.

  2. Knock a few books off your ‘to be read’ list 📚

We won’t judge if you haven’t read a book since your school days, but now is the perfect time to sit out in your back garden or snag a park bench and read a book. The days are much longer so take advantage of that extra daylight. Books allow us to escape reality and be transported somewhere completely different. If you don’t have a clue what books to read, check out Waterstone’s or Penguin’s list for 2021 reads.

  1. Start a garden and grow your own vegetables 🧑‍🌾

Fresh produce is hands down one of the best things about summer, and it tastes even better when you grow it yourself. Not everyone has access to the amount of outdoor space needed for a vegetable patch, but some don’t require much space at all! You can grow 🍅 in a container, 🍓 in a hanging basket, or you can just have a few potted herbs sitting on your windowsill. For those that have a black thumb when it comes to gardening 🥀, find a place to pick your own, or head to your nearest farmers’ market or roadside stand and reap the benefits of someone else’s labour.

  1. Get Active 🥾

Naturally, summer makes us think of water sports and spending time at the beach. Whether you go swimming 🏊, canoeing 🛶 , surfing 🏄 or sailing ⛵️now’s the time to get out on the water. However, the warmer weather and longer days are good for more than just water sports. Go for a nature walk or challenge yourself with climbing one of the country’s many hills ⛰. Get together with friends and play football ⚽️ or golf ⛳️. Getting your endorphin levels up is a great way to boost your mood and enjoy your summer holiday.

  1. Eat out at a new restaurant 🍽

Let’s be honest here, half the reason we enjoy vacation so much is the fact that we have an excuse to go out for dinner and let someone else do the cooking for us 🧑‍🍳. If that’s the case, take a break from your domestic chores and find a new restaurant to go to. Let your taste buds go on the round the world trip you’ve always dreamed of. If you’re on a budget, look up recipes online from different cuisines around the 🌍 and cook them yourself. Staying at home doesn’t have to be boring.
