In case you hadn’t realised it already, you can find insurance for just about anything. Traveller’s insurance, also known as travel insurance, is used as a way to cover any costs associated with loss or damage that are incurred when travelling. 🌍
Travelling can be very expensive, and one way to make sure you don’t lose your hard earned money if something were to happen, is to purchase a travel insurance cover policy. What exactly does it mean? Well, there are several different types of insurance that fall under the term travel insurance:
Trip cancellation coverage ⚠️
So, you’ve planned a big 3 week trip abroad and right before you’re about to leave you get sick…what happens now? If you don’t want to be out of pocket, that’s where trip cancellation insurance comes in. This is the type of policy that covers the cost of the trip if either you, or the tour company has to cancel the trip. Each policy has different coverage, so be sure to read the fine print to know exactly what you’re covered for. 🔍
Baggage or personal effects coverage 🛄
There is absolutely nothing worse than getting to your destination only to realise that your luggage didn’t. 🤦 While airlines often give you a small budget to replace a few items while they locate your bag, you can be left out of pocket for many expenses. This type of insurance also applies to luggage that is damaged or stolen. Homeowner’s insurance can sometimes cover these costs, so double check your policy before you purchase this one!
Short term medical coverage 🏥
While you don’t want to plan to get sick or be in an accident on your vacation, you’re better off safe than sorry. 🤕 Medical coverage when on vacation is one of the best types of insurance to get, because (depending on your destination), medical care can be incredibly expensive. Have you seen the size of American medical bills? 🤯 Certain coverage will even fly you home in case of an emergency, so you can get the care you need on home soil.
If you’ve ever been sick on holiday, or gotten into an accident, you’ll know that the medical costs can quickly add up. If you don’t believe it, learn from my example. I was on a ski holiday 🎿 in Germany several years ago and I got into a ski accident and broke my collarbone. Between the costs of the ski patrol, the ambulance, the stay in the private clinic, and the surgery, I would’ve been out of pocket more than 5000€ — luckily enough, my insurance policy covered everything and I didn’t have to pay a thing. 🙌
Accidental death and flight accident coverage ✈️
What’s interesting about this type of insurance coverage is that it may not be necessary if you already have a life insurance policy. But, don’t dismiss this type of coverage too soon — in case of something happening, your beneficiaries may be able to get a payout in addition to that of your life insurance coverage, so it’s worth taking into consideration. If you’re a nervous flyer, the last thing you want to think about before getting on an airplane is a flight accident, but it can be a good type of insurance to have for your own peace of mind.
Several credit cards have some sort of travel insurance attached to it, so it’s worth taking a look to see if you already have some sort of coverage. 💳 Remember to read the fine print though, because some situations aren’t covered even if you think they would be.
