Why Have I Been Declined Life Insurance?

Looking to see why you've been declined life insurance? Read on for some possible ideas.

Being accepted for life insurance cover isn’t always guaranteed. 😔 This is down to how much risk your life poses and being accepted means you are considered to be an acceptable level of risk. There are many different reasons you could have been declined life insurance, from health and medical reasons to lifestyle factors.

One thing to keep in mind is that life insurance insurers, companies and various covers are all different. It’s not a one size fits all, and not everyone will get the same quote with each.

It depends on how much information you give the insurer. A shortened question set designed to make the buying journey simple means they don't collect as much information and will therefore not be able to accept as many people as someone who gives a full health screening.

Reasons why you might be declined life insurance in general

Medical reasons that might mean you have been declined life insurance

Here are some pretty common medical reasons that may have led to your application being declined.

  • HIV/AIDS
  • Overweight or obese
  • A history of cancer or other illnesses
  • High blood sugar
  • High cholesterol, lipids or triglycerides

It’s not to say that you will be instantly rejected if you suffer from one of these medical conditions, but you may find it slightly harder to get cover.️ The reason for this is having a medical condition like the ones above makes you high-risk in the eyes of an insurance company. Meaning that it might be out of their financial interests to cover you, or it could result in you paying very high premiums. 💷

It’s important to note that if you already have cover and develop one of these conditions, you should still be covered. However, you should always contact your life insurance provider with any big changes like this. If this isn’t a reason to take out life insurance right away, we don’t know what is. Things can change quickly in life, get life insurance with Bequest today and protect your loved ones. ⏰

Lifestyle factors that might mean your life insurance application gets rejected

Here are some common lifestyle factors that could lead to your life insurance application being rejected.

  • Smoking - as with most companies, this is a common factor in determining the price of cover as well
  • High alcohol consumption
  • Risky profession – this could be due to you being in the army, working at heights, in construction, at sea etc.
  • Previous life insurance rejections – we know this might not make you feel too positive about applying again, but if you’ve already been rejected, it is a possibility that it might happen again. This is why it’s best to do as much research and make changes where possible before applying again.
  • Limited income – if you have a limited income, you might be rejected life insurance on the basis that you could fall behind on your monthly premiums.

It might not be just one of these factors that lead to your life insurance application being rejected, but a combination of a few. The more factors that are in your control but pose risk to the insurance company you have, the more likely you are to be rejected.

Reasons why you might be declined life insurance at Bequest

At Bequest, we don’t require any medical exams, just a few simple questions. You can find out in just a few minutes if you can get covered with us. However, because of this, we aren’t always able to cover people with certain conditions (recovered or current).

These can include (but are not limited to):

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Smoking (depending on how much)
  • Those in the army or reserves

If you have one of these conditions or are currently in the army or reserves, there is likely an insurer out there for you. For example, for cancer, check out….

Don’t quit if you’ve been declined for life insurance

If you’ve been declined after applying for life insurance, the best thing you can do is to take a step back, and take a look somewhere else. Don’t start another application straight away with the same company, as it will more than likely be rejected on the same basis.

As mentioned above, this refusal doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to find life insurance cover with another insurer. Do some research or make some calls to see which company is right for you.

FAQs

Why have I been declined life insurance?

It could be for a medical or health reason, or even lifestyle factor. Some reasons are out of your control, but some, such as smoking if you were to slow down or quit, could help you get accepted. Every company has different standards so it’s best to look at the best option for you.

Why won’t the life insurance company tell me why I’ve been declined?

Sometimes the company might not be able to see your answers and won’t know. So unless you tell them the details of your answers, they might not be able to tell you. Others may not be able to connect all the dots with their underwriting engine and give you a firm answer.
