We get it, death is the last thing anyone ever wants to think about. For the vast majority of people, the concept of death and dying is both uncomfortable and scary — even though it’s a natural part of life. 🕊
Talking about death
Although we all know we’re going to die at some stage, many people take the attitude that the less said on that, the better. Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth! This is an important topic to think about and have conversations about throughout your entire life. It is especially important for any parents to consider, as you need to appoint a legal guardian for your children. 👪
Conversations around wills and life insurance at Bequest
At Bequest, we’ve set out to change the conversation and bring awareness to the younger generations. Unfortunately, many people consider life cover and wills to be something exclusive to the older generations.
So let’s make one thing clear: preparing for death doesn’t mean preparing to die! 🙌
A common misconception is that only those who are on death’s door need to write a will. ✍️ Honestly, why wait that long? If something were to happen to you and you die without a will, other people are left to make difficult decisions for you that might go against your wishes.
Did you know that if you purchase either a term or whole life insurance policy when you’re younger, it costs less than if you purchase the same coverage when you’re older?
Life insurance companies (ourselves included) hope you never have to make a claim — not because we don’t want to pay it, but because we want you to live a long and healthy life. But the reality is that life rarely goes according to plan, which is why life cover can give you peace of mind. ✨
Having the conversation about your funeral
For anyone kicking it old-school and are still watching cable 📺 without the use of streaming services, you’ve no doubt seen all the advertisements about people planning their funerals and encouraging their friends to do so too. It almost seems like every second ad is about death or dying! As cringe as those ads are, they have done a good job making it less taboo to plan for death.
Funeral planning at Bequest
At Bequest, we don’t believe that funeral planning is just for the older generations. In fact, we think everyone should take some time to think about what they’d like their funeral to look like. It doesn’t have to be morbid, think of it like planning a party 🎉 — what would you like, do you have any specific requests? After all, if it’s supposed to be a celebration of your life, wouldn’t it make sense that you get a say? 🤷
That’s also where wills come in — they aren’t just for giving all your stuff away after you die, it’s a legal document in which you can write what you’d like to happen to both you and your estate upon your death. Want an eco funeral🌱? Write it in your will. Want part of your estate to go to charity? Write that in your will! And don’t forget to put your life insurance policy in your will too!
Talk about wills and life insurance before you NEED it
We all love to imagine that we’ll live forever which is why most of us put off dealing with this, however, none of us are immortal. The future is uncertain, and the better prepared you are now, the easier it will be on your loved ones later. 💛
